The Dallas Cowboys could be a banged up team come Sunday’s matchup with the San Francisco 49ers. Let’s take a look at the injury report.

  • Cornerback Mike Jenkins and linebacker Anthony Spencer, both with shoulder injuries.

San Francisco looks fairly healthy, and Crabtree appears to be on his way back. This could cause all sorts of problems for a Cowboys secondary that could be very thin without Newman and would now have to deal with Crabtree, Braylon Edwards and Vernon Davis. The only way they might be able to slow down the Niners passing game is to get to Alex Smith and slow down Frank Gore in the run game.

Which could totally happen. This is the 49ers offense after all.

Preseason finale gives San Francisco 49ers a…

At least for the 49ers, there’s a glimmer of hope.

It took until the final opening quarter of the preseason for the 49ers to provide the first piece of evidence that could be parlayed into a possible recipe for success in 2011.

Unfortunately, a single quarter against a group of half-hearted San Diego Chargers does little more than edge the 49ers from no-shots into long shots.

Let’s be honest, 49ers fans needed something, anything to keep them from being convinced this season was headed toward an unmitigated disaster. Chalk up Thursday night’s first quarter as the first positive of the Jim Harbaugh era, reversing what had been up until Thursday night, an unqualified disaster of a dress rehearsal.

Until those two scoring drives — quarterbacked by Alex Smith no less — these 49ers ranked somewhere between a toothache and a migraine. They looked hopeless, like the front-runners by a wide margin for the opportunity to select Andrew Luck with the first pick of the 2012 NFL draft.

It was beginning to look like David Baas knew something.

Like he’d looked over the 49ers’ roster of offensive linemen and knew the group couldn’t protect the quarterback from a band of determined Boy Scouts, not to mention angry, 300- to 350-pound athletes posing as defensive linemen bent on squashing him.

Like he knew that no matter how good Harbaugh is going to be as the 49ers’ coach, the 49ers’ quarterback of 2011 was going to spend 16 games running for his life.

And Baas grabbed the first ticket out of town, courtesy of the New York Giants.

There are very few absolutes in professional football. One, however, states unequivocally that a quarterback with no time has no chance. And his team has no chance, too.

While 49ers fans may have been suffering through all this, Bay Area sports fans had to recognize the 49ers’ offense this preseason. It looks just like the Giants’ offense, which has for the past month convinced fans that runs were no longer coming.

When the 49ers have taken the field this preseason, it’s felt like the end zone was 300 yards away. Uphill. Over a river. Through an obstacle course. That changed a little bit Thursday night.

Sure, there’s a lot of football to be played, but the 49ers needed to take some small step in their preseason finale for their fans. They had to restore hope for the faithful. And on Thursday night, they did that. At least a little.

OK, Frank Gore has been out. So has Michael Crabtree. So there are some straws still left to stir these 49ers.

Unfortunately, grasping at straws describes precisely how the 49ers stand with another season upon them.

Final roster cuts leave San Francisco 49ers with…

At first glance of the 49ers’ 53-man roster, you’d think they will feature a run-oriented attack more fit for ex-coach Mike Singletary.

They’ve retained only two quarterbacks, two tight ends and just as many running backs as wide receivers (five apiece).

Then again, the 49ers now can scour other teams’ trash and add to a roster that already features 19 newcomers.

Josh McCown’s release Saturday leaves the quarterback chores to starter Alex Smith and rookie backup Colin Kaepernick. McCown, an eight-year NFL veteran, signed Aug. 17 as the proverbial No. 3 quarterback, a role the 49ers have opted to eliminate.

Vernon Davis and Delanie Walker are the only tight ends who made the cut for what is supposed to be a tight end-heavy offense. Nate Byham was placed on the injured-reserve list because of a knee injury, and undrafted rookie Konrad Reuland from Stanford got cut and is expected to receive a practice-squad invitation.

Of the nine offensive linemen invited to stick around, versatile veteran Tony Wragge isn’t among them.

That makes 23 offensive players for first-year coach Jim Harbaugh. The defense has 27 slots, and rounding out the roster are kicker David Akers, punter Andy Lee and long snapper Brian Jennings.

Undrafted rookies Demarcus Dobbs and Ian Williams made it onto the seven-member defensive line. Dobbs, from Georgia, was a strong inside presence to complement rookie outside linebacker Aldon Smith, the 49ers’

first-round pick, in Thursday’s exhibition finale at San Diego. Williams, from Notre Dame, posted on his Twitter account two hours before the roster deadline: “Blessed! Officially a 2011 San Francisco 49er!”

Of the 49ers’ 10 draft picks, only two didn’t make the roster: wide receiver Ronald Johnson, a sixth-round pick out of USC, and cornerback Curtis Holcomb, a seventh-round pick who is on injured reserve with a ruptured Achilles.

McCown’s only action in a 49ers uniform came in the second half of Thursday’s exhibition finale at San Diego. McCown completed 4 of 4 passes for 51 yards in that 20-17 win.

McCown was coaching high school quarterbacks in North Carolina before the 49ers signed him last month, a day after they worked out Daunte Culpepper.

The only other quarterbacks the 49ers had in training camp were undrafted rookies: McLeod Bethel-Thompson (cut Saturday, 0 for 1 Thursday) and Jeremiah Masoli (cut Aug. 22).

San Francisco 49ers Roster Cuts Projection: Could…

Read More: 49ers roster cuts, 49ers 53-man roster, Nate Lawrie (TE – SFX), Frank Gore (RB – SFX), Moran Norris (FB – SFX), Nick Howell (G – SFX), Kevin Jurovich (WR – SFX), Tyler Beiler (WR – SFX), Brian Bulcke (DE – SFX), Donovan Edwards (C – SFX), Derek Hall (OT – SFX), Joe Hastings (WR – SFX), Chris Hogan (WR – SFX), Seth Smith (RB – SFX), Anthony West (DB – SFX), Kenny Wiggins (OT – SFX), San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers and the rest of the NFL have a Tuesday deadline to make their first official roster cuts of 2011. Originally the rules required teams to cut down to 75 players, but the rule was changed to 80 for this season. Teams will make final roster cuts down to the regular season 53-man roster this weekend following the conclusion of the preseason schedule.

As the 49ers make their initial roster cuts, undrafted free agents and some first and second year street free agents are unlikely to last through Tuesday. Some of the undrafted free agents that could get cut include:

DL Brian Bulcke
OL Donovan Edwards
WR Chris Hogan
WR Joe Hastings
DB Anthony West
OT Derek Hall
OT Kenny Wiggins
RB Seth Smith
WR Tyler Beiler

Among the fairly “green” veterans on the roster, some potential cuts include:

OG Nick Howell
TE Nate Lawrie
WR Kevin Jurovich

The ten cuts on Tuesday will include many of these players. However, it is also possible the cuts could include more veteran players. One player who pops to mind is fullback Moran Norris. He is a Frank Gore favorite and has a good chance of making the roster. At the same time, the coaching staff likely knows as much as they’ll ever know about Norris. If they wanted to give some additional playing time this Thursday to a younger, less known player, it would make sense to cut Norris and provide that additional time. Additionally, cutting Norris now gives him a couple extra days to latch on with another team.

This is not to say Norris or other established veterans will get a pink slip Thursday. In fact, I would argue if Norris survives Tuesday’s cut, he is likely to survive this weekend’s cut. If the team still wants to keep him around after Tuesday, I’m not sure how much can change before the final cuts this weekend.

There is the quick update of the day.

San Francisco 49ers kicker Joe Nedney expected to…

Joe Nedney is expected to hang up his cleats Friday after 15 seasons as one of the NFL’s most accurate kickers, this newspaper has learned.

In preparation for the move, the 49ers agreed to terms on a three-year deal Thursday with longtime Philadelphia Eagles kicker David Akers.

No announcement has been made regarding Nedney’s future, but it appears injuries may have caught up with him. His career is in jeopardy after ending the past two seasons on the injured reserve list.

The former San Jose State and Santa Teresa High standout would depart as the most accurate kicker in 49ers history. Nedney nailed 86.6 percent of his attempts since joining the team in 2005 and ranks sixth on the 49ers’ all-time scoring list with 541 points.

Nedney would also go out a winner: His last kick was a 29-yarder in overtime against the St. Louis Rams last Nov. 14.

Nedney, 38, was scheduled to earn $1.87 million this season. He sustained a bone bruise and strained right knee in that Rams game and finished the season on injured reserve.

Akers, 36, is a five-time Pro Bowl selection, including in each of the past two seasons. No kicker has ever produced more points in a single decade than the 1,114 he scored from 2000-09.

Akers has made 81.9 percent of his career kicks.

  • Colin Kaepernick, a right-hander once drafted by the Chicago Cubs, might require a pitch count this week. With incumbent starter Alex Smith prohibited by league rule from participating in practice until Thursday, Kaepernick is in line for a heavy workload — which is fine with him. The second-round pick from Nevada wants to show he’s ready for whatever the NFL throws his way.

“I think when you come into a situation you want to be the starting quarterback. I don’t feel like I got drafted here to be a spectator,” Kaepernick said Thursday. “So I want to come in, I want to compete and get on the field as soon as possible.”

Smith has agreed to terms on a one-year deal. But veterans signing new contracts can’t take the field until 1 p.m. Pacific time Thursday, when the new league year begins. (Smith still can attend meetings.)

For a camp arm, the 49ers signed former Sacramento State quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson, most recently a SaberCats backup. Quarterback David Carr was released.

  • Isaac Sopoaga, who started all 16 games last season as the left defensive tackle, said he has been told he’s moving to nose tackle. He’ll replace Aubrayo Franklin, who is drawing interest elsewhere as a free agent.
  • Tackle Adam Snyder expects to get some training camp reps at center in the wake of David Baas’ defection to the New York Giants.

“I’ve been a versatile player for seven years now. I’m just kind of ready to take on whatever position they want me to do,” Snyder said.

  • Receiver Dominique Zeigler (knee) and rookie fullback Bruce Miller (undisclosed) were placed on the physically unable to perform list.
  • What do you guys think about this.
