San Francisco 49ers 2011 Training Camp Preview

REPORT DATES: July 28th

SITE: Marie P. DeBartolo Sports Centre, Santa Clara, CA

CAMP OBJECTIVES: It doesn’t look as if Jim Harbaugh’s going to encounter much
smooth sailing as he begins his first season as the 49ers’ head coach. Not only
will the ex-Stanford program architect have a shortened span to implement a
new system to a revolving roster, but he’ll probably be doing so without the
team’s best offensive player present at the start of camp, with word breaking
out that workhorse running back Frank Gore intends to hold out in search of a
contract extension. While his absence throws a wrench into Harbaugh’s plans, it
does offer a chance for San Francisco to get an extended look at its two young
backs, second-year man Anthony Dixon and rookie Kendall Hunter. The Niners will
have returning starting quarterback Alex Smith back in the fold, having signed
the former No. 1 overall pick to a one-year contract, though he may be simply
just holding down the fort until the team deems athletic rookie Colin
Kaepernick, a second-round choice in April’s draft, ready for action. Both
should see plenty of action in the preseason. On defense, the linebacking corps
will have at least one new regular following veteran Takeo Spikes’ departure,
with sophomore Navarro Bowman the front-runner for that gig, and a competition
between youngsters Reggie Smith and Taylor Mays at strong safety is one of
several camp battles expected to take place under the new regime. Another is
set to be held at center, where a replacement must be found for free-agent
defection David Baas.

PRESEASON SCHEDULE (All Times Eastern):

Aug. 12 – at New Orleans, 8 p.m.
Aug. 20 – vs. Oakland, 8 p.m.
Aug. 27 – vs. Houston, 8 p.m.
Sep. 1 – at San Diego, 10 p.m.

49ers, Raiders have discussed sharing stadium

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco 49ers president and CEO Jed York says the team has discussed sharing a new stadium with the Oakland Raiders but is focused “100 percent” on building a facility in Santa Clara.

York, son of owner John York, also said Tuesday the new labor agreement has made it easier to secure sponsors and the financial backing for a stadium. He says the rival teams wouldn’t be competing for league dollars.

The Bay Area teams need to replace their aging facilities, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has urged both to work on a two-team stadium. But the franchises have never agreed on the site.

The 49ers have plans to build a stadium near the team’s headquarters in Santa Clara, and Raiders owner Al Davis wants one near the Oakland Coliseum.
