“The strongest of all warriors are these two – Time and Patience.” – Leo Tolstoy, War and Peace

Alex Smith certainly has spent a good amount of time wearing a San Francisco 49ers’ uniform while fans haven’t always found the patience to tolerate Smith’s mediocrity. In Smith’s case, it was the lack of patience and abundance of time that became his enemies and fought against him. Perhaps to the chagrin of some 49ers’ fans the team was unable to strike a deal with future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning. All the while, scorned quarterback Alex Smith was off meeting with the Miami Dolphins.

In the end, however, things fell into place as they were destined and Manning is now a member of the Denver Broncos and Smith is once again a 49er – this time with a three-year contract in place.

His return in 2012 should be a very special one indeed. After a 2011 season where Smith led the 49ers to an appearance in the NFC Championship Game and put up the best numbers of his seven-year NFL career he can only get better, in my opinion. Why is that, you ask? There are several reasons, but these seem to be the ones that best explain Smith’s projected development:

Playing in the same system for the second straight year. In 2012, Alex Smith will enjoy the comforts of running the exact same offense, with the exact same coaches and coordinators for consecutive years for the first time in his NFL career. The only difference in 2012 will be the upgraded pieces the 49ers have surrounded Smith with. With the ability to work out of the same offensive scheme as the previous year, the focus can be drawn away from learning the plays and geared more towards Smith’s development. Smith didn’t have a perfect 2011, but his offseason work and stability should prove to be the building block for an even better 2012.

Upgrading of key offensive positions. The 49ers have their top-ranked defense back in full force, so the only logical thing to do in the draft and free agency was to upgrade the offense. Among those upgrades include an improved wide receiving corps with acquisitions A.J. Jenkins, Randy Moss, Mario Manningham, and Chris Owusu. Not to mention that the 49ers picked up LaMichael James, Jewel Hampton, and Brandon Jacobs to bolster the running back position. With a much more versatile offense, Alex Smith will have more options than he did in 2011 – and he still has Frank Gore, Michael Crabtree, Vernon Davis, and Delanie Walker.

Working out with Tom House. It was reported on May 13 that back in March, for one week, Alex Smith worked out with former MLB pitcher Tom House. While his crossover to coaching a football player may seem lost in translation, Tom Brady, Matt Cassel, and Carson Palmer were all there with Smith, working with House. Perhaps the fact that Tom Brady was there says enough about his credibility, but what would House really know about throwing a football? When he was coaching baseball, House used to have his pitchers throw with footballs because it’s the same neural pathway as throwing a baseball and it could help improve their throwing motion. (Apparently it’s all about getting your body behind the ball for the most efficient throw – regardless of sport.)

According to Jim Harbaugh, Smith has already made dramatic improvement in his throwing motion – something that had been affected by his shoulder surgery in 2008 and has hindered his ability ever since. But now, Smith has the opportunity to build on his 2011 performance and once again have the best year of his career.

Which of the three reasons make you feel the most confident in Alex Smith in 2012: the same offensive scheme, the new talent around him, or the workout with Tom House? Is there something else that has you feeling confident in Alex Smith or do you not have confidence in him to lead the 49ers?

Randy Moss of the San Francisco 49ers has a supposed reputation of giving up on his quarterbacks and his teams.

Randy Moss of the San Francisco 49ers has a supposed reputation of giving up on his quarterbacks and his teams. Most notably, other players have said that if Moss gets frustrated, he goes into shutdown mode. However, one thing that can’t be argued is that Moss is still an exceptional athlete. I don’t think anything proved that as much as when the media got their first chance to watch the 49ers work out.

According to other players such as Donte Whitner and Alex Smith they couldn’t believe that Randy Moss is in such good shape after missing a year of football. He apparently has stayed in impeccable shape and leads the players when sprinting and doing other workouts. Most importantly however, he seems to have taken Michael Crabtree under his wing and the two have been inseparable.

My one concern would be Moss guiding Crabtree in the wrong direction. But all indications point to the opposite being true. Moss and Crabtree are always working out together when partners are needed and apparently they both find joy in working with one another. Which brings me to the question, “Will San Francisco 49ers’ Randy Moss mentor Michael Crabtree in the right direction?”

Honestly, I’m just hoping that the motivation is actually mutually beneficial more so than just Moss guiding Crabtree in a positive direction. I don’t think Moss is a bad player, but his reputation does precede him. If Crabtree can somehow “breathe new life” into Moss, allowing him to find the motivation to be a positive influence while playing for the 49ers, then it would be a welcome surprise.

Also if Moss can find the motivation from the 49ers’ youth to be a positive role model it would certainly help Crabtree immensely. Crabtree has been accused of being a diva and prima donna while playing here in San Francisco. Some fans have a negative perception of him and his lack of hard work make him an easy target. Perhaps Randy Moss will realize that his greatest contribution to this team is more than just spreading the defense with his route running. He could end up being a veteran who leads our young receivers in the right direction.

Since I’ve obviously done a good job talking up Randy Moss and what he brings to the 49ers, do you think that his work ethic will last throughout the season? Or will one overthrown ball from Alex Smith force Moss to go into “shutdown mode”?

WebMD states that a concussion is “a traumatic brain injury that is caused by a blow to the head or body, a fall, or another injury that jars or shakes the brain inside the skull.”

The causes sound like they could easily be caused by the game of football if you ask me. And to be honest, that is the risk that players are taking and have always taken. Even with the new helmets and added protection against concussions, the only sure way not to sustain a concussion would be to never touch anybody while on the field or to not play the game of football.

While that solution is impossible for anyone who wishes to play in the NFL, those who have had concussions and continue to play are upping the ante. Step into frame Chris Owusu, wide receiver from Stanford, formerly coached by Jim Harbaugh, and now a member of the San Francisco 49ers – as an undrafted free agent.

Owusu is a highly talented wide receiver – possibly one of the most physically talented players in the draft – but he didn’t get drafted. Was his 40-yard dash time too slow? Nope. He ran a 4.36 40-yard dash – third best at the combine. What about his vertical jump, that had to have been low? 40.5 inches – fourth best at the combine. It must have been the broad jump then? Try again. 129-inch broad jump – good enough for second among wide receivers, just behind Stephen Hill.

So why wasn’t Chris Owusu picked by a team during seven rounds of a draft that saw 253 players selected over three days? One word: concussion.

Actually, it was more than one. Owusu suffered three concussions over a 13-month period while playing at Stanford. One of which was so severe he was taken off the field by an ambulance. No one drafted him because of his concussive history and he fell all the way to the 49ers in undrafted free agency. Of all the 49ers’ undrafted free agency signings, Owusu may be one of the few that makes it in the NFL. He is challenging what everyone else thought of his injuries by agreeing to join the 49ers and I admire that. I’m just not too certain he understands the implications of playing with such a history of concussions.

Sure the risk for re-injury is there and greater than ever, mostly because of his injury history, but also due in part to the fact that the NFL is played much faster and harder than the college game. While some see him as a liability, I don’t think he sees himself that way. I know that I see him as a potentially talented player who could end up being a key part of the 49ers’ offense. But does the risk of re-injury outweigh the potential reward? And remember, he hasn’t even officially made the team yet. What if he gets injured during the preseason or during an OTA or minicamp?

Only time will tell what kind of risk Owusu is taking and how it could affect him long term. Do you think Chris Owusu is a liability with his injuries or will he prove to be a talented NFL wide receiver?

During a chat with fans posted on the 49ers’ official team website, via Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, Smith revealed that he recently spent time working on his throwing motion independently.

“I saw a mechanics guru, or specialist down in L.A.,” Smith wrote. “I went there to kind of clean some things up with my motion. I’m really focused on getting my fundamentals better. Really didn’t have time last offseason to do it.”

Citing a source close to the quarterback, Comcast SportsNet Bay Area reported that the 49ers are hoping Smith can become even more accurate by fixing two key issues with his throwing motion, and that doing so will be a focal point of his offseason preparations.

According to the site, one issue is that Smith doesn’t flex his left knee enough during his stride, and the second is that Smith isn’t balanced enough when dropping back to throw.

Smith, taken first overall by the 49ers in the 2005 NFL Draft, made the 2011 season his best in the NFL by completing 273 of 445 passes for 3,144 yards and 17 touchdowns. He was also picked off just five times while leading San Francisco to a 13-3 record and, eventually, to the NFC Championship Game.

That’s all the news for today.

The 2012 NFL draft was an opportunity for the San Francisco 49ers to grow deeper at several positions. In the first round they took A.J. Jenkins, a wide receiver from the University of Illinois and in the second round they took Oregon running back LaMichael James. They certainly surprised some fans by taking those two players in the first two rounds when it was common knowledge that the 49ers needed to strengthen their offensive line. However, despite the need, the 49ers took the opportunity to get deeper at two positions that have lacked depth in recent years.

In addition to the draft the 49ers have signed 17 undrafted free agents, some of which have real possibility of making the 53 man roster – despite having a rich injury history. In fact, if it weren’t for their injuries, they could have potentially had more complete college careers and been drafted. Let’s take a look at some of the formerly injured undrafted free agents who have the potential to make the 49ers’ roster.

 Jewel Hampton, RB, Southern Illinois

Hampton signs with a 49ers team that has a lot of depth now at the running back position. Here is a list of potential running backs the 49ers have on their roster: Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter, Anthony Dixon, LaMichael James, and Brandon Jacobs. Hampton could make the 49ers’ roster and bump off players such as Dixon and Jacobs. I remember Hampton being on track to become a big star before tearing both of his ACLs while playing at Iowa. Another 49er suffered two major knee injuries and turned out just fine – his name is Frank Gore. It will be a challenge for Hampton to make the roster, but I have no doubts that fans will enjoy this player during the preseason and root for him to do so.

 Chris Owusu, Stanford, WR

Owusu is another player who could have gone in the draft if it weren’t for three concussions in his last two years at Stanford. At the combine Owusu ran a 4.36 40-yard dash and although he was limited in his junior and senior seasons with Stanford, in 33 career games he caught 102 passes for 1534 yards and 10 touchdowns. Like Hampton, Owusu is facing a 49ers roster that is significantly deeper at the wide receiver position. However, since the need for wide receivers is greater than that for multiple running backs Owusu could easily make the 49ers’ roster and potentially bump a player like Kyle Williams to the practice squad.

 Kourtnei Brown, Clemson, LB

Brown was a player who never put up a lot of numbers during his college career, but was another player to struggle through injuries. Brown is a long, athletic pass rusher who was slowed by groin, ankle and knee injuries – limiting his opportunities to produce. Brown was able to put himself on the map with standout performance against North Carolina in the 2011 season. He and Aldon Smith are almost identical in size and having seen what Smith was able to bring to the table in 2011, I’m excited to see Brown join the 49ers as an evolving pass rusher.

The 49ers have built a deep, talented football team that really has put San Francisco back on the map. These players mentioned, including the other undrafted free agents and those taken in the later rounds will only help make the 49ers a more complete football team. What other undrafted free agent signing are you excited about? Do you think others have a better shot at making the team than those I mentioned?

Jim Harbaugh addressed the media upon completion of the 2012 NFL Draft. The session gave us an inside look at exactly what Coach Harbaugh thought of the players he drafted, as well as his mentality prior to and throughout the draft. His intensity is everlasting and it showed during the draft and also during the media session. From his time with the media there were a few things that certainly grabbed my attention.

Media: Was there a guy in this class that you had been eyeing all along, that you ended up getting that you’re really happy about?

Jim Harbaugh: “Yeah, I’m happy about all of them, I really am. Starting with [WR] A.J. Jenkins. Just great tape, great young man. I defy anybody to look at that tape and tell me that there’s something wrong with it, that there’s something that he doesn’t do well.

The San Francisco 49ers baffled some fans with certain players taken early in the NFL Draft. I, for one, had never even heard of A.J. Jenkins being connected with the 49ers in any way, shape or form. The wide receivers we heard about were Rueben Randle and Stephen Hill – both second round picks – and the 49ers selected Jenkins instead. Apparently the team was targeting players all along instead of going with what was the “best available”. That speaks a lot to both Jim Harbaugh and Trent Baalke knowing what they want out of their football team.

M: In this offseason, you guys have added some speed dimension to your offense, both in the draft and in the free agency. Talk about how important that was to add that to give Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman something else to work with, more weapons to work with.

JH: “Well, you want to be bigger, you want to be faster. You want to be stronger, tougher. You’re always looking for those talents. And we’re a big, strong football team right now. We don’t want to lose that. And we’re not going to lose that. And we’ve definitely added some speed, but those players, we didn’t just take guys who were just speed guys. Not just work out warrior-type guys, but football players.

The 49ers definitely added some speed and strength with players like Jenkins and LaMichael James in the draft. As stated, those players were taken by the design of Harbaugh and Baalke. They wanted to remain a fast, physical football team and the players they were able to add – not just in the first two rounds – definitely give the 49ers the look they desire. Speaking on James in particular, I think his versatility is what drew the team’s attention. His attributes played strongly into the 49ers’ hands in terms of what they wanted and he will certainly be a valuable asset to offensive coordinator Greg Roman.

M: What made Looney’s interview at the Combine so impressive? Why did he jump out to you?

JH: “Oomph, pizzazz. Really bright guy. Really smart, smart person. Not only book smart, but street smart, football smart. Everything matched up. Everything that you’d heard about Joe and all of our research that we did on Joe at the school. You cannot find a person on that campus who has anything less than glowing things to say about him. Professors, coaches, trainers, equipment managers, from faculty to football to everybody that comes in contact with him there literally not a negative word.

The 49ers apparently were able to make targeted picks early on because they knew they wanted Joe Looney from Wake Forest — and that they could possibly get him later in the draft. They were able to grab him in the fourth round and use the earlier rounds to get deeper at the wide receiver and running back positions. From this pick and what Harbaugh says, he obviously wants players with character and football talent – not just the latter. Looney is expected to compete for the starting right guard job with Alex Boone and Daniel Kilgore. I would like to think that Harbaugh’s prediction of Looney starting for the 49ers would not only come to fruition, but benefit the team greatly.

SANTA CLARA, Calif.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Trent Baalke never felt pressured to load up on rookies or sacrifice depth to make one, splashy pick.

With a talented roster expected to challenge for the Super Bowl, the San Francisco 49ers general manager instead built depth and created future flexibility on the final day of the NFL draft.

Baalke still hopes the 49ers also plugged a few holes — and maybe found a hidden gem — in Saturday’s late rounds, selecting guard Joe Looney of Wake Forest, Notre Dame linebacker Darius Fleming, Michigan State free safety Trenton Robinson, offensive lineman Jason Slowey of Western Oregon and defensive end Cam Johnson of Virginia. San Francisco also netted three picks for the 2013 draft.

“It’s all about value,” Baalke said. “We feel good about that depth. It’s about drafting players at the right value, and also making sure that they have a legitimate chance to make this football team.”

Going to back to Friday’s third round, it seemed San Francisco might never draft another player.

The 49ers traded back three straight times from the 92nd pick before moving up to land Looney in the fourth round and 117th overall. San Francisco sent its original fourth-round pick (125th) and a sixth-rounder (196th) to Detroit.

The 6-foot-3, 318-pound Looney started at left guard the last three seasons for the Demon Deacons and — unlike the team’s other picks on the final day — could have an immediate chance to play. San Francisco lost right guard Adam Snyder to Arizona in free agency.

“As impressive an interview as we had at the combine,” 49ers coach Jim Harbugh said of Looney, emphasizing the lineman’s “oomph” and “pizazz” as reasons. “We believe he will be a starter in this league for us.”

Looney has a head start.

He spent part of the off-season working out with former 49ers centre Jeremy Newberry (1998-2006), who knows Looney’s agent, Andy Ross. The practice should speed up Looney’s learning curve in Harbaugh‘s complex version of the West Coast offence.

The pulling guard — a key position in San Francisco’s zone-blocking scheme to attack linebackers — had a left ankle injury that kept him from working out at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis and Wake Forest’s pro day. He said Dr. Bob Anderson — the same specialist to perform surgery on Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry’s right ankle last year — in Charlotte cleared him for running and jumping activities two weeks ago.

“I love pulling around, coming up on linebackers,” said Looney, who can also play centre. “I feel like that’s an offensive lineman’s time to shine.”

Looney’s selection followed a series of trades by San Francisco to add future picks.

Baalke parlayed the original 92th overall pick in the third round into five picks in trades with Indianapolis, Miami and Carolina. In all, that included a pair of sixth-round selections Saturday — one of which was later sent to Detroit — plus a pick in the third, fifth and sixth round in 2013.

The 49ers lost to the eventual champion New York Giants in the NFC title game and figured it best not to overload with late picks who probably won’t make a talented roster this fall anyway.

“We feel like we’re ready to go,” Baalke said, acknowledging the team will sign undrafted free agents in the coming days.

That will include at least a trio of former Stanford players — defensive end Matt Masifilo, wide receiver Chris Owusu and safety Michael Thomas — who Harbaugh recruited while the Cardinal’s coach. Masifilo drove from the nearby campus and signed minutes after the draft ended.

“That’s probably one race and the last race I’ll ever win against Owusu,” said Masifilo, confirming his teammates would soon join. “Coach Harbaugh likes to cut drag. He said it’s a competition to get down here as fast you can.”

Familiarity proved to be a common theme for Harbaugh’s new group.

The 49ers drafted wide receiver A.J. Jenkins of Illinois in the first round Thursday before selecting Oregon running back LaMichael James on Friday. James, Looney and Fleming made it three straight players Harbaugh had faced while Stanford’s coach.

Fleming had 55 tackles, 3 1/2 sacks, one interception and one forced fumble for the Fighting Irish last season. San Francisco has perhaps the NFL’s best linebacker corps with All-Pros Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman and sensational rookie Aldon Smith, among others, but a shortage of outside linebackers. Still, it will be tough for Fleming to find playing time as a rookie beyond special teams.

Even though he will be half a continent away from his native Chicago, Fleming should feel right at home.

He was a college roommate of San Francisco’s Ian Williams, and the two are close friends. Fleming, who wanted to avoid the agony of watching the draft, was stuck in Chicago traffic when Harbaugh called him to deliver the news.

“I was actually rolling pretty well and then once I got the call traffic hit,” Fleming said. “I’m fine with being stuck in traffic now that I’m a 49er.”

In the sixth round, San Francisco took Robinson 180th and Slowey 199th overall.

Robinson had 76 tackles last season and his nine career interceptions are tied for 12th in Michigan State history. Slowey played left tackle for most of his career at Western Oregon but is projected at centre or guard in the NFL.

The 49ers took Johnson in the seventh round and 237th overall. The Virginia defensive end is expected to shift to a pass-rushing outside linebacker in Vic Fangio’s 3-4 scheme in a transition similar to the one Aldon Smith made a year ago.

“It’s a historic day for so many of these young men,” an overenthusiastic Harbaugh said. “But it’s not the end. It’s very much the beginning.”

The suspense is finally over for Bay City native Trenton Robinson.

After a longer than expected wait, the former three-year starter at free safety for Michigan State saw his dream realized on Saturday when the San Francisco 49ers made him the 10th pick of the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

“I’m very excited that they took a chance on me,” Robinson said in a conference call with the 49ers. “I’m just really ready to get out there and work. My dream is here. I just don’t even know how to feel except that I’m super excited to get out here and work and show them what I can do.”

Robinson becomes the first person from Bay City to be drafted into the NFL since 1973 when Jerry List was taken by the Oakland Raiders in the 11th round out of Nebraska.

After being projected to come off the board in the fourth round, Robinson lasted until pick No. 180 . The main drawback for many analysts was his size at 5-10, 195.

He moves to a team that advanced to the NFC Championship game last season — with a Michigan man at the helm.

“College is over right now, so I’m very excited, just upbeat,” Robinson said. “(Harbaugh is) just a fellow Big Ten player to be able to play with and get coached by, and he does a great job what’s he’s done with that team in the last year is just unreal. So, I’m excited to get out there and have a great coach, coach me.”

A four-year letterwinner at free safety for Michigan State, Robinson tallied 229 tackles, nine interceptions and 12 pass break-ups in 46 career games with 32 starts. Robinson’s nine interceptions rank tied for 12th in program history. He was a two-time All-Big Ten selection for the Spartans and a team tri-captain as a senior. Robinson’s class became only the fourth in program history to have never lost to Michigan.

As a senior, Robinson was named to the Jim Thorpe Award watch list, finishing third on the team with 80 tackles. His four interceptions ranked second in the Big Ten. Robinson helped lead the Spartans to the inaugural Big Ten Championship game where he finished with 12 tackles. A triple-overtime win over Georgia in the Outback Bowl ended a bowl losing skid that spanned back to 2001.

Robinson was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week against Michigan as a junior after recording seven tackles, an interception and a pass break-up.

Robinson was a three-year starter for Bay City Central, and was named one of the state’s top seniors in 2007 at cornerback. He finished with 45 tackles, four interceptions, 14 pass break-ups. Robinson also rushed for 472 yards and five touchdowns, while catching 16 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns.

He becomes the first Bay City Central player to be drafted by the NFL since Dennis Wirgowski in 1970.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) – Trent Baalke never felt pressured to load up on rookies or sacrifice depth to make one, splashy pick.

With a talented roster expected to challenge for the Super Bowl, the San Francisco 49ers general manager instead built depth and created future flexibility on the final day of the NFL draft.

Baalke still hopes the 49ers also plugged a few holes – and maybe found a hidden gem – in Saturday’s late rounds, selecting guard Joe Looney of Wake Forest, Notre Dame linebacker Darius Fleming, Michigan State free safety Trenton Robinson, offensive lineman Jason Slowey of Western Oregon and defensive end Cam Johnson of Virginia.

The 6-foot-3, 318-pound Looney started at left guard the last three seasons for the Demon Deacons and – unlike the team’s other picks on the final day – could have an immediate chance to play.

He spent part of the offseason working out with former 49ers center Jeremy Newberry (1998-2006), who knows Looney’s agent, Andy Ross. The practice should speed up Looney’s learning curve in Harbaugh’s complex version of the West Coast offense.

The pulling guard – a key position in San Francisco’s zone-blocking scheme to attack linebackers – had a left ankle injury that kept him from working out at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis and Wake Forest’s pro day. He said Dr. Bob Anderson – the same specialist to perform surgery on Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry’s right ankle last year – in Charlotte cleared him for running and jumping activities two weeks ago.

“I love pulling around, coming up on linebackers,” said Looney, who can also play center. “I feel like that’s an offensive lineman’s time to shine.”

Looney’s selection followed a series of trades by San Francisco to add future picks.

Baalke parlayed the original 92th overall pick in the third round into five picks in trades with Indianapolis, Miami and Carolina. In all, that included a pair of sixth-round selections Saturday – one of which was later sent to Detroit – plus a pick in the third, fifth and sixth round in 2013.

That will include at least a trio of former Stanford players – defensive end Matt Masifilo, wide receiver Chris Owusu and safety Michael Thomas – who Harbaugh recruited while the Cardinal’s coach.

Fleming had 55 tackles, 3 3/4 sacks, one interception and one forced fumble for the Fighting Irish last season.

Slowey played left tackle for most of his career at Western Oregon but is projected at center or guard in the NFL.

I have to be honest.

I have to be honest. I didn’t really think this was a need-based draft for the San Francisco 49ers – and apparently neither did Trent Baalke or Jim Harbaugh. If anything, it was an opportunity to grow deeper at certain positions and if possible, acquire a guard to compete for the starting right guard slot alongside Daniel Kilgore and Alex Boone. The fifth round of the NFL Draft is underway as I type this article, so I won’t give my thoughts on the draft as a whole just yet, but I did want to talk about the 49ers’ second round draft pick, LaMichael James.

As a fan of Stanford – and having dated a girl whose entire family were from Eugene, OR – I got to see and hear a lot about James – and I liked every bit of it. The first thing that popped into my mind when the 49ers drafted him was, “Wow, the actually 49ers just did that.” I was expecting them to take that guard I kept hearing fans say the team needed so badly with the departure of Adam Snyder. But no, the team took the best available player – something the analysts said the 49ers had the amenity of doing.

But once my mind got to work thinking of all the different ways that Jim Harbaugh could use James, I have to admit that they made a good move in my book (let the disagreeing begin). For me, James is a versatile and explosive offensive weapon. He could be most valuable to the 49ers in a Darren Sproles type role, but he has to get better at catching the football in order for that to happen. He can, however, also return kicks and punts, something that hurt the 49ers in the 2011 NFC Championship Game.

I know that most of you are wondering why the 49ers took a running back when they have a roster laden with talent at that position. The 49ers have Kendall Hunter, Frank Gore, Anthony Dixon, and Brandon Jacobs all on their roster, but I would imagine that Dixon may not make the team in 2012. Leaving Jacobs, Gore, Hunter, and now James on the 49ers’ roster. While carrying four running backs may seem a little luxurious, in my opinion James’ versatility makes him a must-have on the roster.

What I’m most excited about though, will be to see him work together with Jim Harbaugh. Both men have stated their eagerness of being on the same team after having opposed each other while Harbaugh was coaching at Stanford and James was playing at Oregon. James loves Harbaugh’s coaching style and Harbaugh says that James is unstoppable in the red zone, as well as in other facets of the running game. In all, James should prove to be a vital asset to Jim Harbaugh and the 49ers. This provides the team with depth and usefulness at a position of importance in the NFL and in the 49ers’ style of football.

How about the rest of you? Do you like LaMichael James being taken in the second round of the 49ers or could the pick have been better utilized?

The 2012 NFC West schedule of head-to-head games includes a Monday night game on Oct. 29 between the San Francisco 49ers and the Arizona Cardinals. There are also two Thursday night games that will air on NFL Network. The first is Oct. 4 between Arizona and the St. Louis Rams and the second game is on Oct. 18 between San Francisco and the Seattle Seahawks.

The only week where all four teams play against each other comes in Week 17, where the division title could get decided. San Francisco is looking to repeat as champion of the NFC West, but rebuilding efforts in Seattle, St. Louis and Arizona will look to cause damage of their own.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cleveland Browns and NFL fans, who do you say the league’s teams should pick in the first round of the draft on Thursday?

While it feels like just yesterday that the NFL season ended with Super Bowl XLVI, it’s already been nearly three months since the season has ended. I remember thinking that the 2012 NFL Draft and season seemed so far away, but now we’re staring them right in the face.

While I’ve already previewed some of the players the 49ers could take with their 30th overall pick, I thought about other ways we could see what kind of talent could fall to the 49ers. Given that this year’s draft isn’t for another three days (on April 26), the next best thing to do was to look at previous drafts. The 49ers will draft 30th in the first round, so let’s take a look at some notable players who have been drafted with the 30th overall pick since the 2000 NFL Draft.

Reggie Wayne, Indianapolis Colts, WR (2001)

Wayne is probably the best player to be taken 30th overall so far in the 2000s. While he was drafted to compliment star receiver Marvin Harrison, he carved out his own star in Indianapolis. Wayne is a Super Bowl champion (XLI), a three-time All-Pro selection (2007, 2009, 2010), and a five-time Pro Bowl selection (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010). Despite missing Peyton Manning in 2011, Wayne still caught 75 passes for 960 yards and four touchdowns. If the 49ers can get the longevity out of their 30th overall pick like the Colts have with Wayne, I’d be more than happy.

Heath Miller, Pittsburgh Steelers, TE (2005)

Miller is a tight end who contributed right out of the gates for the Pittsburgh Steelers. In his rookie season, the 6’5” 256 lb. tight end caught 39 passes for 459 yards and six touchdowns. Since then, Miller has been a consistent target for Ben Roethlisberger and has helped the Steelers to two Super Bowl titles. If the 49ers grab a player as consistent and healthy as Miller has been for the Steelers, Super Bowl title number six might not be far away for San Francisco.

Dustin Keller, New York Jets, TE (2008)

Keller is another tight end who has brought some consistency to the NFL. Since joining the league in 2008 he has caught at least 45 passes and over 500 yards each season. His best year came in 2011 when he caught 65 passes for 815 yards and five touchdowns – all while starting just 12 games. Keller is a solid tight end who shows why a player like Coby Fleener – a name connected with the 49ers – could make a big impact as the 30th overall pick.

Kenny Britt, Tennessee Titans, WR (2009)

Out of the gates, Britt showed exactly why the Titans drafted him when they did. His rookie season was solid, amassing 701 yards on 42 receptions and three touchdowns. However, it was his sophomore campaign that opened up the eyes of the Titans. He started just seven games – played 12 games total – while on his way to a 42 reception, 775 yard season with nine touchdowns. In his NFL career to date, he has averaged 17.5 yards per catch and if it weren’t for a torn MCL and ACL in the third game of 2011, it could have been his breakout season as a full-time starter. Should the 49er draft a receiver with Britt’s work ethic and progression, it would be a welcome sight after what has been a disappointment with Michael Crabtree.

Overall, the 49ers are setup for success with their roster in its current state. However, that doesn’t mean the draft won’t be a good way for the team to add depth and acquire talent that could only help them in the long run. While all signs point to the 49ers drafting an offensive lineman, wide receiver or tight end with their first pick, no one will really know until we hear Roger Goodell say, “With the 30th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select…”

 Let’s just hope it’s a good one.
