January 3rd, 2007 I’ve Been Busy

Sorry I have’nt posted lately, I have been very busy.  How about that win last Sunday?!  We beat the Broncos in OT with about 2 minutes left, Nedney’s field goal, and we destoy any playoff hopes the Broncos had.  Unfortunately, later that night CB Darrent Williams was shot and killed in a limo.  RIP.

On a much brighter note, the 49ers future is looking good, and Mike Nolan says he expects the playoffs in ‘07.  Go make us proud 49ers, and KEEP THE FAITH

December 27th, 2006 Oh Well

The 49ers’ playoff hopes were thwarted Sunday by the Arizona Cardinals.  26-20 was the final, a couple of key turnovers by the 49ers really ended up being the difference maker, also that our defense couldn’t compete with the high-powered Arizona offense.  Hopefully management will go out and make some moves this off-season, I have already heard our names rumored with some top notch defenders, such as LB/DE Adalius Thomas (Ravens), who is a free agent at season’s end.

We may end up with a very high pick now, even after, in my opinion, a very successful season.  I’m sure Mike Nolan and company will make a good pick, and hopefully more, because I believe we have 8 draft picks in the first three rounds!

Keep the faith.  Next year may be a winning year.

December 21st, 2006 Gore, Allen, receive Pro Bowl Honors

Guard Larry Allen and running back Frank Gore have been selected to participate in the 2007 Pro Bowl.  Allen was named to his 11th Pro Bowl while Gore is making his first career Pro Bowl appearance. Also, cornerback Walt Harris was named as a first alternate and defensive tackle Bryant Young was chosen as a second alternate.

“It is a tremendous team honor to have Larry Allen and Frank Gore represent the 49ers in the Pro Bowl,” said head coach Mike Nolan. “Larry and Frank work extremely hard and are diligent in every aspect of their preparation. I think their selections today reflect the work ethic of our entire offense.”

Larry Allen has long been widely recognized as one of the NFL’s premier offensive lineman. In 13 NFL seasons since being drafted out of Sonoma State by the Dallas Cowboys, Allen has been named to the Pro Bowl 11 times. This is first Pro Bowl berth as a member of the 49ers after making 10 appearances as a member of the Cowboys. Allen has been a crucial piece of the 49ers offensive unit which ranks third in the NFL in rushing yards per attempt (5.0) and fourth in rushing yards per game (138.1).
Gore, a second-year player from Miami is having a breakout season. The running back leads the NFC and ranks third in the NFL with 1,491 rushing yards. He needs 80 yards to set a franchise record with the most yards in a season. Garrison Hearst currently holds the 49ers mark with 1,570 yards rushing in 1998. He leads the league with 14 rushes of 20 or more yards. Gore has set franchise records in rushing yards in a game with a 212-yard performance against Seattle and holds the team record with eight 100-yard rushing games. He has also been named NFC Offensive Player of the Week twice this season.

Harris was chosen as a first alternate. If he plays in the game it will be his first Pro Bowl appearance. Harris has been one of the best free agent acquisitions in the NFL, leading the team with a career-high six interceptions. The 11-year veteran from Mississippi State intercepted a career-high three passes against the Oakland Raiders, good for second in team history for a single game. He was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts. Harris was an opportunistic defender in the month of November, accounting for three interceptions in the 49ers four games. Harris also added 19 tackles and one forced fumble in November and was named NFC Defensive Player of the Month.

Young was named as a second alternate. If he plays in the game it will be his fifth Pro Bowl appearance. One of the most respected and disruptive defensive players in the NFL, Young’s explosive combination of speed, strength, quickness and intensity have served him well in his thirteen seasons with the team. In 2006, the defensive lineman has 5.0 sacks and 54 tackles. Currently, Young ranks third all-time in team history with 82.5 career sacks.

December 21st, 2006 Offensive Line Turnaround

“The oline has been so great this year,” praised quarterback Alex Smith. “We’ve done such a great job with depth, when one guy does go down whether that be for a play or a couple of games, whoever is coming in is not skipping a beat, not missing anything. We are going on and executing and playing well and those guys up front deserve a lot of credit, especially those guys moving around and filling in. That’s a hard thing to do sometimes and they are doing a great job.”

In week one, when the 49ers opened their season in Arizona, they quickly lost Pro Bowl guard Larry Allen with an MCL sprain on the game’s first series that caused him to miss the next five games. Tony Wragge came in that game in Allen’s stead, and when right next door, starting left tackle Jonas Jennings went down in that same game with an ankle injury, Adam Snyder came in to fill his shoes, leaving two new players on the left side of the line.
The starting lineup returned to its original form against Chicago with Snyder sharing reps at right tackle with starter Kwame Harris, a plan that originally took shape back in training camp. Harris and Snyder would then fall into a 50-50 pattern until Snyder suffered a knee sprain against the New Orleans Saints.
Coincidentally, with that healthy line Frank Gore had four out six straight games with more than 100-yards on the ground including a 212-yard day against Seattle giving this young 49ers offense an identity.  Now the line forges ahead again this Sunday with the division on the line without starting center Eric Heitmann.  “It’s tough to lose your center, that’s the gasoline in your tank and he really held the oline together,” said Harris. “But we still have to play, the game goes on and we’ve got two great centers backing him up. We all know that as an offensive line whoever is in there will do their job.”

“I have really good confidence in my guys,” said Gore. “Wragge came in for Larry early-on and did a great job. Snyder played right, left tackle, guard. They come in and do a great job. It’s a big loss that Heitmann is done, but I know the other guys work hard and they love to do their job. There’s no question they’ll open holes for me this week, no question.”
Gore is only 79 yards shy of beating the 49ers franchise record for the most yards in a single season has its way of building Gore with that kind of confidence, but so does the way this offensive line has prepared and produced.

Arizona did hold Gore to 87 yards in the season opener, but the running back made an impact in the passing game with 83 yards receiving. Additionally, that game was mostly without Allen who is back in top form and was just selected to his 11th Pro Bowl. “Defenses have been coming after me all year,” said Gore. “They are a good defense, they are physical. But, if Big L.A. and all my linemen, receivers and fullback do what they usually do, we’ll be alright.”

December 21st, 2006 Thursday Night Football

December 20th, 2006 Playoff Hunt

Well 49er fans, low and behold, we are in the playoff picture.  How exciting is this?  A team that was predicted to have a top 5 draft pick has a decent chance of making the playoffs.  As of now the 49ers stand with a 6-8 record, with the next two games as must wins, if we want to have any chance at the playoffs.

Week 16: vs. Arizona

Week 17: @ Denver

The 49ers, as long as they don’t choke, will beat Arizona at home.  The tough game will be going to Denver and winning.  Denver is in the playoff pitcure as well in the AFC, and this weekend they play the Cinncy Bengals at home.  If Denver beats the Bengals, they may have clinched a playoff berth, meaning against the 49ers, they can sit some regulars, giving the 49ers a good chance of winning the game.  So this weekend, don’t only root for the 49ers, but root for the Broncos.

Obviously root for the Chargers too, because they are playing the Seahawks.  The Seahawks are 8-6, if they end the year 8-8, as do the 49ers, the 9ers will take the division crown with the tie breaker.

Other games to watch for:

Redskins (5-9) vs Rams (6-8)

New Orleans (9-5) vs NY Giants (7-7)

Carolina (6-8) vs Atlanta (7-7)

Minnesota (6-8) vs Green Bay (6-8)

That’s all for now, until then, GO 9ERS!
